The "Piece Of Cardboard" That Sold For $4M

An exclusive interview with "Vegas" Dave Oancea, the sports gambler who sold Mike Trout's rookie card for a $3.6M profit.

Every morning I write an email discussing the business and money behind sports. If you would like to receive it directly in your inbox, subscribe now.

Friends,

Last week, “Vegas” Dave Oancea sold his Mike Trout 2009 Bowman superfractor rookie card for $4M. Not only was it the most expensive sports trading card ever sold, beating out the 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner card that sold for $3.12M in 2016, but Dave purchased the card only 2 years prior - for $400,000.

How did Vegas Dave 10x his money in 24 months?

“A combination of reduced supply and market timing.”

Earlier this week I sat down with Vegas Dave and discussed a wide variety of topics. Instead of digging deeper into the trading card market myself, I’ll let Dave do the talking.

I’ve attached our 20 minute interview below.

We cover a lot, including:

  • The story of Dave illegally making $10,000/month as a teenager

  • The plea deal he accepted in Federal Court

  • His ban from Vegas casinos

  • The negotiation to buy the card from Taiwan 2 years ago

  • How he reduced the market supply of Mike Trout cards to drive the price higher

  • Why he turned down a $3.5M all-cash offer

  • The impact celebrities like Gary Vaynerchuk have on the market

Enjoy the interview and have a great weekend!

Talk Monday.
