🎉 Celebrating One Year Of Huddle Up 🎉

Today’s Email Is Powered By…

Hey friends,

Exactly one year ago yesterday, I sent out the first issue of Huddle Up. My thought process was simple: to bring you the best stories at the intersection of business and sports.

The first email went out to two people — me & my girlfriend Lexi — but in the 12 months since, it’s been an amazing journey and a lot of fun to watch the Huddle Up community grow to over 45,000 subscribers.

I’ve written emails from a hotel lobby when my power went out and on my phone in the airport while traveling, which was challenging, to say the least. But more importantly, I’ve learned a lot and made some incredible friends along the way.

I have a lot of fun & interesting things in the works, but to celebrate, I wanted to share some crowd favorites from the past year. Let me know which one’s your favorite!

Thank you for being a reader and supporter of Huddle Up — it means the world to me.

Have a great weekend!

Joe

The story of Allyson Felix, an 11-time world champion, who stood up to a global powerhouse in her fight for equality. It’s not every day you see an Olympic champion risk it all going head-to-head with a global sports brand, attempting to enforce change for others - but that’s exactly what Allyson Felix did with Nike. Let’s run through it…

Michael Jordan is widely considered the greatest basketball player of all time. With an estimated net worth of $2.1 billion, Michael Jordan has become the richest athlete in the history of sports, turning $90M in NBA earnings into a $2.1 billion empire. Check out how Jordan has cemented his status as a legend on and off the court.

With his childhood club facing financial stress, a professional sports gambler named Matthew Benham invested about $700,000 into Brentford FC a decade ago. The interesting part? Promoted to the English Premier League this season, that investment is now worth more than $300 million. Here’s how he used analytics to achieve it.

A former car salesman that has never played, coached, or broadcasted a single professional basketball game was recently inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. His name is Nav Bhatia, and this is his incredible story.

Peloton's Transition To A Lifestyle Company (Image: Peloton via Glossy)

Peloton, the leading fitness equipment, media, and technology company, has been a rocket ship the last few years — accelerated further by the COVID-19 pandemic. But there is one part of the business no one is talking about: apparel. Let’s explore how apparel may represent the most significant upside for Peloton in the future.

Earlier this year, Kevin De Bruyne signed a new ~$100 million contract with Manchester City. He didn’t use an agent to broker the deal and, even better, worked with a team of data analysts to assess his current influence at Man City and his projected value in the future. Read more about how De Bruyne used data to negotiate a major payday.

At 44,000+ subscribers, Huddle Up is quickly becoming one of the largest sports business communities on the internet — every addition helps :)
